Fire Sprinkler

The Plumbing exams consist of 150 questions with a 4-hour time limit. The Heating exams consist of 90 questions with a 4-hour time limit.

***A North Carolina Business and Law exam must also be taken in order to obtain any of these licenses . You will have only one hour to answer 50 questions.***

License Definitions

Fuel Piping

FP (Fuel Piping) Contractor: Fuel gas piping from an approved fuel source to any system, equipment, or appliance located inside the premises.

FP (Fuel Piping) Technician: Fuel gas piping from an approved fuel source to any system, equipment, or appliance located inside the premises. This is not a contracting license; must be a sub-licensee of a Fuel Piping Contractor, unless used to qualify a ‘Class A’ dealer.

Plumbing

P-I (Plumbing-Class I) Contractor: Potable water and drain/waste/vent piping systems in any building (residential, commercial, industrial).

P-II (Plumbing-Class II) Contractor: Potable water and drain/waste/vent piping systems in single-family detached dwellings only.

RLP (Restricted Limited Plumbing) Contractor: Exterior buiding sewer piping, exterior water service piping 2″ or less, exterior backflow preventers on 2″ or less piping, water filtration systems.

P-T (Plumbing) Technician: Potable water and drain/waste/vent piping systems. Must be a sub-licensee of a licensed plumbing contractor. This is not a contracting license.

Heating/Air Conditioning

Heating Group 1

H1-I (Heating Group 1-Class I) Contractor: “Wet” or “water-based” comfort heating systems in any building (residential, commercial, industrial).

H1-II (Heating Group 1-Class II) Contractor: “Wet” or “water-based” comfort heating systems in single-family detached dwellings only.

H1-T (Heating Group 1) Technician: “Wet” or “water-based” comfort heating systems. Must be a sub-licensee of a H1 Contractor. This is not a contracting license.


Heating Group 2

H2 (Heating Group 2) Contractor: Forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity in excess of fifteen (15) tons in any building (residential, commercial, industrial).

H1-T (Heating Group 2) Technician: Forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity in excess of fifteen (15) tons. Must be a sub-licensee of a H2 Contractor. This is not a contracting license.

Heating Group 3

H3-I (Heating Group 3-Class I) Contractor: Forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity of fifteen (15) tons or less in any building (residential, commercial, industrial).

H3-II (Heating Group 3-Class II) Contractor: Forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity of fifteen (15) tons or less in single-family detached dwellings only.

H3-T (Heating) Technician: Forced air heating/cooling system with cooling capacity of fifteen (15) tons or less. Must be a sub-licensee of a H3 Contractor. This is not a contracting license.

Fire Sprinkler

FS (Fire Sprinkler Installation) Contractor: Water-based automatic fire sprinkler system design, installation, repair.

FS-IC (Fire Sprinkler Inspection) Contractor: NFPA 25 Inspections of water-based fire sprinkler systems.

RFSC (Residential Fire Sprinkler) Contractor: NFPA 13D systems in single-family dwellings. (also requires P-I or P-II license).

FS-IT (Fire Sprinkler Inspection) Technician: NFPA 25 Inspections of water-based fire sprinkler systems as an employee of a qualified employer or as a sub-licensee of a Fire Sprinkler Inspection Contractor. This is not a contracting license.

FS-M (Fire Sprinkler Maintenance) Technician: Limited maintenance activities of water-based fire sprinkler systems on premesis of employer.  This is not a contracting license.

Electrical

SP-PH (Special Plumbing & Heating): Allows limited electrical work incident to plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. Although participants cannot take their books into the exam, it is necessary to obtain some of the books in order to study for the exam.
