The Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) issues State Licenses to Commercial Contractors for the following trades: Electrical, HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Refrigeration. To receive a state license, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

Be advised: Once you have been approved by the Board, you are required to complete a State and Federal Background Check prior to sitting for the examination.

 

OHIO BUSINESS LAW EXAM: Applicants must pass a Business Law exam in addition to their contractor specialty exams. Participants are given two hours to pass the 50-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions about tax laws, lien laws, OSHA compliance, insurance and bonding, estimating and bidding, regulations regarding personnel, licensing, financial management, and general knowledge.

OHIO ELECTRICAL EXAM: Applicants have 5 hours to complete this 100-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions pertaining to conductors and cables, motors and generators, service feeders and branch circuits, boxes and panel boards, transformers and equipment, raceways, and general knowledge.

OHIO HVAC EXAM: Applicants have 4 hours to complete this 100-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions about warm air heating and air distribution, air conditioning, piping systems, ventilation and exhaust systems, testing and inspections, and general knowledge.

OHIO HYDRONICS: Applicants have 2.5 hours to complete this 50-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions about piping, pumps, valves, fuel gas and oil, venting controls, testing and inspections, heating equipment, and general knowledge.

OHIO PLUMBING: Applicants have 4 hours to complete this 100-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions about isometric analysis, roof drain piping, drainage, waste and sanitary vents, indirect wastes, plumbing fixtures, regulations, specialty plumbing, and general knowledge.

OHIO REFRIGERATION:  Applicants have 3 hours to complete this 60-question exam. A score of at least 70% is required in order to pass. Applicants will be expected to answer questions about refrigeration piping, refrigerants, refrigeration systems and controls, testing and inspection, and general knowledge.
